A Second Round of Mangrove Seedlings at Pangani Nursery #2

ForestPlanet is back in action at Pangani Mangrove Nursery #2, or PN2, a proven operation on the banks of the Pangani River in Tanzania’s Tanga Region. We’ve just started another 200,000 seedlings in this tried-and-true area.

It’s familiar ground: PN2 has already produced over 400,000 healthy seedlings, all of them outplanted into nearby sites. This latest round draws on that experience, with a bit more efficiency and know-how behind it. Many thanks to our business partners and numerous generous individuals for helping to make this happen.

Thousands of soil tubes ready for seeds

The nursery site itself does much of the work because nature. Mature trees shade the beds, much like parents protecting their babies, and tidal channels deliver nutrient-rich water in and out twice a day. As such the seedlings get consistent irrigation without a single pump or well.

White mangrove seeds

The seed mix — red, white, black, yellow, and cannonball mangrove — is collected within a few hundred meters from the nursery. The seedlings will mirror exactly what grows native and wild along this stretch of coast. The trees are suited to the ground they’ll return to before they’re even outplanted.

Thank you, Partners!

Every seedling bed at PN2 is mapped, numbered, and marked on-site with a weather-resistant sign noting species, count, and potting date. It’s the kind of quiet, unglamorous discipline that makes this nursery something we can stand behind. We’ll be able to show, not just tell, exactly what 200,000 seedlings look like as things come together.

The new seedlings will be outplanted at the right time, in the right way.. as before.

This is ForestPlanet’s proven model: find a site, fund a trusted partner, evaluate the results, get smarter with each iteration. It’s the same instinct behind Esther’s nursery and our next Family Backyard Nursery. And the good news is that PN2 has more to give: the site has room for another 500,000 seedlings. So, as funding allows we can expand this nursery immediately rather than start from scratch elsewhere.

This year’s seedlings will become next year’s outplanted trees

Every tree planted is a step toward a more stable climate and stronger communities.  Please visit our Linktree to see the different ways that you can participate.
